Timothy Kan, the chief strategy and growth officer for the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, has left Iowa in favor of a similar position at UCSF Health in San Francisco.
The departure sees Mr. Kan leave the Iowa hospital system for UCSF Health one year after former UI Hospitals & Clinics CEO
Suresh Gunasekaran was appointed president and CEO for UCSF Health in March 2022.
As senior vice president and chief strategy officer, Mr. Kan will be responsible for "leading and executing the strategic planning function for UCSF Health," according to a news release.
“UCSF Health is a recognized globally for delivering high quality care, driving clinical innovation, and advancing health equity,” said Mr. Kan in a statement. “I am excited and humbled by the opportunity to work with leaders from across the organization to advance UCSF Health’s mission.”
Mr. Kan has more than 20 years of experience for academic medical centers, regional health systems, and other health care providers and payers.
UI Health Care did not return a request for comment.
In October 2019, Mr. Kan was named University of Iowa Health Care's
first chief growth officer, reporting directly to Mr. Gunasekaran.
“We are excited to have someone of Tim’s caliber and experience in this new position,” Gunasekaran said in a news release at the time. “His experience working in academic medicine, in value-based care, and in developing effective partnerships will move us forward more quickly.”
“With its strong programs and engaged leadership, University of Iowa Health Care is uniquely positioned to continue to grow and innovate care delivery,” said Mr. Kan when he was hired by UI Health Care. “Plus, a move to Iowa will provide a welcome return to midwestern values, bring me closer to my extended family and give me the opportunity to spend more time with my wife and two young children.”
UI Hospitals & Clinics has yet to replace Mr. Gunasekaran as CEO, first attempting to find a new vice president for medical affairs (VPMA) and dean of the Carver College of Medicine. Chief Nursing Executive Kimberly Hunter is currently acting as
interim CEO.
In December, UI Health Care resumed its search for a new VPMA after ending search efforts earlier in the year when a candidate declined the position due to family obligations.
Brooks Jackson, who
hoped to step back into a faculty position to pursue research, has continued to serve in both roles while the university finds a replacement. Any new hire would fill both roles.
The UCSF healthcare system includes the UCSF Medical Center, which is ranked among the top 10 hospitals nationwide, as well as UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, with campuses in San Francisco and Oakland.
