A crowd of over 50 people gathered to celebrate the opening of Iowa City’s first Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers location on Tuesday morning.

The new restaurant is located in the Old Capitol Town Center at 201 S. Clinton St. Suite 142, previously occupied by Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. The next closest Raising Cane’s franchise is the Coralville location.

Before the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a line of University of Iowa students and local residents formed outside the restaurant for a chance to win free Cane’s for an entire year. The “Lucky 20” customers were selected by the new location’s restaurant leader.

Also in attendance were representatives from Greater Iowa City, a live DJ, and staff from the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center, which was awarded a $1000 check as part of Cane’s local nonprofit support efforts.

Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague also attended and spoke before the ribbon cutting, welcoming the fast food chain to town.

“I’m so thankful that we have this opportunity to bring yet another business into the community, because you know what that means? That means more opportunity for individuals to work,” Mr. Teague said. “And even though we’re going to be serving chicken, we’re going to be making people happy.”

The new location will also offer a commemorative hat and a free Box Combo coupon card for the first 100 customers who purchase a Box Combo.

The restaurant’s interior features a distinct Hawkeye theme, with Black and Gold tables and memorabilia from UI athletes and famous alumni. The location’s live DJ will keep spinning tunes throughout opening week, as well as on weekends and Iowa Football game days.
