Perkins Restaurant & Bakery in Coralville at 819 1st Avenue is opening for business once again on Monday, Oct. 24, following a temporary closure and remodel.
After first opening in Coralville nearly 50 years ago in 1974, the restaurant sustained
$500,000 in damages from an accidental fire in July 2021, as reported by KCRG.
It will be the first time the restaurant has reopened since the fire.
Perkins restaurant locations have suffered from fire damage extensively in recent years. Since 2014, at least
eight locations have reported fire incidents, according to Mashed.
“We are delighted to present our refreshed building design and added services for our
guests to enjoy,” said Jim Frank, chief operating officer for Perkins, in a statement. “We greatly appreciate our customers’ patience, while our team focused on renovating the restaurant with a brighter new look for the Coralville community.”
The remodeled Coralville location will feature the company's new prototype design, making for a smaller storefront, carry-out windows, and a new parking lot layout to make off-premise meal pick-up and delivery seamless. The idea has been developed by Ascent Hospitality Management since 2019.
“We've recognized the consumer’s looking for higher levels of convenience,” Ascent CEO Michael Abt told Full Service Restaurant (FSR) Magazine in July.
Newer Perkins locations are
now 4,600-square-feet instead of the larger 5,800-square-feet conterparts, according to FSR.
Bakery By Perkins allows the brand's bakery items to purchased through delivery apps. The restaurant will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to midnight.
