Iowa City’s Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) is offering a 50/50 matching grant for selected art projects, in an effort to foster creativity and enhance accessibility to the arts.

The 2024 Public Art Matching Grant Program is seeking original and contemporary projects which advance the city’s public art priorities and utilizes a realistic plan that uses long-lasting, quality materials.

Applicants must utilize a variety of funding sources and backing for their project, and fill an artistic gap by boosting public access or opportunity for the arts.

According to Iowa City’s website, “projects that are functional, ephemeral, unexpected, or have a participatory element will be strong competitors.”

The maximum award amount is $4,000 for a project cost of $8,000, and a minimum of $500 for a $1,000 project.

The Iowa City Public Art Program aims to make public spaces better, capitalize on Iowa City’s cultural reputation and contribute to the city’s identity as a vibrant place, by offering programs in arts and culture that educate, entertain, and involve the public. This helps support the diverse community, preserve Iowa City’s heritage, and make Iowa City an even more attractive place to live and visit.

The PAAC was established to oversee the operations of the Public Art program and advise the City Council on potential sites that can be enhanced by the addition of public art and also recommend various pieces of artwork.

Applications for the grant are due March 15, 2024.
