IC Ped Mall playground design finalized

After reviewing public input and agreeing to an updated concept, the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Commission and a steering committee is moving forward with a plan to replace the current Ped Mall playground during spring 2022.

The new playground is the same size as the old one (site constraints prohibited expansion) but it will replace equipment that is 20 years old.

All playground project play equipment has been ordered and selected to increase the level of accessibility to the tower structure, add toddler swings, and refine the City of Literature elements.

The new tower will have stair access to all levels and features a lively architectural design that fits well with the downtown area. It will also exceed the requirements outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The final design is available to view online.

More than 550 people responded to the design. The steering committee consisted of parents, downtown business owners, Iowa City Public Library children’s librarians, parks staff and representatives of the Downtown Association board. Their goals were to make the playground safe but attractive, accessible, inclusive and low maintenance.
