The IC Free Medical and Dental Clinic has named Dr. Jennie Schmidt as new executive director to replace the outgoing Barbara Vinograde. She is retiring from the position after more than 10 years in the role.

Replacing her, effective March 3, is Dr. Jennie Schmidt, a faculty member at Mount Mercy University. She earned her doctorage from the University of Iowa and her BA from Earlham College. Dr. Schmidt worked alongside Ms. Vinograde for the last six years.

On Monday, the clinic posted a farewell message with the two leaders side by side.

Ms. Vinograde worked in education as an elementary teacher and then professor. She first started at the clinic as a patient services co-director and moved to clinic operations director, before assuming the executive director position.

“It’s been an incredible opportunity to get to work with Barbara for 9 years,” said Brandon Keese, a three-term FMC board member, in a Facebook post. “Her unbelievable commitment to the clinic has taken it to heights none of us could have imagined. Her ability to welcome all with open arms at the Clinic doors is unprecedented.”

In 2021, the FMC celebrated 50 years of service, making it the second longest serving clinic in the U.S. Last year the clinic provided 5,550 clinic visits to a population that is 96% uninsured, according to a press release.

The IC Free Medical and Dental Clinic attempts to eliminate barriers to health care by providing services at no cost. Primary care, specialty care, and care for chronic illness is provided. Through partnerships the clinic can provide services for pregnant patients, patients with diabetes and dental patients.
