BDC Group Inc., a Hiawatha telecom firm founded in 2015, has laid off 35 employees and is closing its operations, according to an Iowa WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) ACT filing.

The employee layoffs were announced Jan. 30, but were effective Jan. 25, according to the WARN filing.

Attempts to reach the company by phone and email for further information were unsuccessful.

Building Diverse Communications (BDC) Group offered a variety of products and services for broadband and communications infrastructure development, including Outside Plant (OSP) fiber construction, telecom site development, on-demand services, project management and logistics.

The company listed several prominent clients on its website, including Google, AT&T, Verizon, NASA, Lumen and the Federal Aviation Administration.

BDC Group had moved into newly constructed corporate headquarters at 1525 Ketelsen Drive in Hiawatha in June 2021. The move came in the wake of several recent initiatives and accomplishments of BDC Group, including the successful launch of a Sterling, Virginia office, installation of 2.5 million feet of fiber optic cabling across the country in 2020 and a doubling of its workforce over the previous six months.

The company filed for Chapter 11 reorganization bankruptcy protection in June 2023. That filing was later converted to Chapter 7 liquidation bankruptcy, a case that remains ongoing.
