For the second year in a row, Hy-Vee has been voted the Best Place to Buy Wine/Spirits in the Corridor.

There are 11 locations that have separate Wine & Spirits stores that carry a wide variety of beers, wines, spirits and accessories such as glasses and mugs and corkscrews.

We asked several wine and spirits managers for their summer recommendations. Brian Schadler, of the Oakland Road Hy-Vee, 3235 Oakland Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids, told us that Cedar Ridge Winery & Distillery near Swisher exclusively has provided the store with single-barrel five-year aged dark rum and bourbon whiskey.

In the beer section, bomber bottles – 22 ounce single-serve bottles – are flying off the shelves. Mark Hackert, of Iowa City Drugstore, 310 N. First Ave., added that India Pale Ales, more commonly known as IPAs, are favorites among customers. Among the most popular IPAs are Two Hearted Ale and Oberon Ale from Michigan-based Bell’s Brewery. Both are a little lighter than the average hops-heavy IPA.

Mr. Hackert also suggests dry and crisp rosè wines which “are refreshing when it’s hot outside.”
