Alex Trunnell has been named the new executive director of His Hands Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids, according to a release.

Mr. Trunnell brings with him skills for streamlining workflows and a passion for increasing the clinic’s work in mental health.

His corporate experience, combined with seven years on the Board of Directors at Foundation 2 Crisis Services, give him a unique perspective.

Mr. Trunnell said he is looking forward to using that experience to grow His Hands by “understanding the emotional, mental and spiritual needs of the less fortunate in our community, – really, how people can fall through the cracks.”

Mr. Trunnell  has a number of years in management at True North and HNN Risk Services, and said he hopes to grow those business connections in the community, “to further develop key community relationships including with other medical providers and nonprofit partners.”

“Dental and mental health support still need resources, and I’m here to make that possible,” he said, adding that he intends to showcase the clinic and the high quality of care offered by the staff.

Mr. Trunnell is succeeding nine-year His Hands director Dawn Brouwers, who is remaining on staff at the clinic and will be focusing her efforts on publicizing the clinic and raising funds for clinic operations after a $1.8 million capital campaign in 2022.

“After the capital campaign, I just did not know where to lead the organization next,” Ms. Brouwers said. “I knew it was time to step down. There was an open position in fundraising and I love that, so it seemed like a great fit.”

His Hands Free Clinic’s mission is to bring glory to God by meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of community residents without adequate resources. The clinic has been operating in Cedar Rapids since 1992, bringing free medical care to those who are uninsured or with a high insurance deductible.

The clinic provides medical, dental, chiropractic, women’s health, physical therapy, durable medical equipment, spiritual care, patient advocacy, prescription assistance and off site optical.

The clinic currently needs a variety of volunteers including nurses, dentists, physical therapists, chiropractors and off-site optical care.
