The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine had 141 senior medical students participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) this year, according to a news release.
At the annual event, held Friday, March 15, medical students discovered where they will be fulfilling their residencies.
Among this year’s class, 44 percent (62 graduates) chose primary care specialties, which include family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology. There were 27 matches in internal medicine, 16 in family medicine programs, 14 in pediatrics, and 4 in obstetrics and gynecology.
Among this year’s graduates, 42 will remain in Iowa for their first year of postgraduate training, 33 of which will train next year at UI Hospitals and Clinics, the news release states.
Geographically, the most popular state after Iowa for first-year training was Minnesota, with 16 graduating students receiving their residency training there. Wisconsin (10), California (9), and Illinois (9) round out the top five states that will receive Iowa graduating students.
