NAMI class to help families cope with mental health

The National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, has developed a new course that will offer tools and support to families with loved ones with mental health conditions.

The course – NAMI Family-to-Family – is an eight-week educational course to help family members of adults living with mental illness. The free course will be offered in person and online by NAMI Linn County beginning Sept. 11.

Delivered by trained facilitators who offer lived experience, the evidence-based NAMI Family-to-Family curriculum includes:

  • Up-to-date information on mental health conditions and how they affect the brain
  • Current treatments, including evidence-based therapies, medications, and side effects
  • How to manage crises, solve problems, and communicate effectively
  • How to develop empathy, confidence, and stamina to provide support with compassion

Course materials, discussions, and exercises examine the biological origins of mental illness. The classes will be held 6-8:30 p.m. for eight Mondays beginning Sept. 11, ending Oct. 30. Advance registration is required by Sept. 7.
