Cedar Rapids-based Mercy Medical Center has acquired the first CT (3D) breast specimen imaging system in the state of Iowa, according to hospital officials.
The Clarix Imaging VSI-360 breast specimen imaging system will help Mercy’s breast cancer surgeons identify tumors more easily during lumpectomy procedures, as well as provide patients with greater peace of mind by knowing they are less likely to need additional procedures later.
The Clarix Imaging VSI-360 breast specimen imaging system uses advanced, proprietary software and high-resolution imaging to give doctors detailed, real-time information about body tissues during surgery. This innovative technology creates full-3D and thin-slice, cross-sectional visualization of the tissue at a 360-degree angle, which means doctors can see tiny details and make better decisions with pinpoint accuracy during surgery, thereby reducing the risk of complications and second surgeries.
“This new technology gives me a clearer view of what’s happening inside the body and provides a wide range of benefits for patients,” said Dr. Vincent Reid, surgical oncologist and medical director at Mercy’s Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, in a news release. “For instance, with the Clarix Imaging technology, we can precisely and clearly visualize the exact location and details of a tumor and confidently determine and confirm that all traces of a breast cancer tumor have been removed.”
