Magalhães named Iowa Association of Realtors president

Shaner Magalhães, an Urban Acres real estate agent, has been inducted as the 2024 Iowa Association of Realtors (IAR) president. He is the first IAR president from Urban Acres to be named to the position and only the sixth from the Iowa City area. His one-year term will begin Jan. 1, 2024.

Mr. Magalhães is one of more than 40 owner agents at Urban Acres in Iowa City, which offers a distinct business model as the first and only member-owned real estate firm in the state.

He started his real estate career in Iowa in 2010, combining his background in business and management with a passion for volunteering and community building. Today, he is a Certified Negotiation Expert (CNE) and holds an At Home with Diversity (AHWD) designation from the National Association of Realtors.

“Shaner is a champion of Realtors not only in the Iowa City area, but across the state of Iowa,” said Gavin Blair, IAR CEO, in a release. “We are looking forward to his tenure as president and have no doubt his ideas and vision will continue to elevate our profession.”

As IAR President, one of Mr. Magalhães’ top goals is to open the door for more conversations about real estate in Iowa.

“We’re a better organization when more voices are heard,” Mr. Magalhães said in a release. “I plan to encourage more IAR members to attend events, participate in committees, and share their perspectives. I want to hear what members think is important from larger towns to smaller towns throughout the state.”

Mr. Magalhães outlined other priorities, including:

  • Enhancing the Realtor brand and emphasizing the role of the profession in protecting consumers in real estate

  • Promoting the “IAR 360 tour” to educate members on educational, legal, and advocacy benefits

  • Increasing Realtors involvement at all levels of government to further advocate for legislation that supports the real estate industry

  • Collaborating with DEI initiatives across the state to increase homeownership among people of color

  • Engaging state-wide brokers and owners with quarterly updates on their key concerns

Mr.  Magalhães has been active in Eastern Iowa and statewide real estate leadership, including serving as the 2015 Iowa City Area Association of Realtors president. He also serves as vice president on the board of directors for Iowa City’s Summer of the Arts and has served on the board of directors for the Iowa City Public Library, the Iowa Finance Authority, the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance, and the Coralville Public Library.

Established in Iowa City, Urban Acres is the first and only member-owned real estate firm in the Corridor. The company specializes in residential and commercial real estate.

IAR is Iowa’s Realtor trade association for more than 8,200 real estate professionals in the state.
