In a move aimed at bolstering community services, the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, Inc. (HACAP) has officially purchased the Olivet Neighborhood Mission property from Olivet Presbyterian Church. HACAP is set to take ownership of the site around Sept. 1.
Since 1999, the Olivet Neighborhood Mission has been home to HACAP’s Head Start program, currently running two classrooms at the location. Over the years, Olivet has been a crucial partner of HACAP’s Food Reservoir, evolving into one of the most high-volume pantries in Cedar Rapids.
“We are excited about what this property addition will allow us to offer people who live and seek services on the northwest side of Cedar Rapids as we transition the facility to a HACAP Neighborhood Resource Center housing our Head Start program, as well as other services,” said Jane Drapeaux, CEO of HACAP.
HACAP plans to maintain its Head Start services at the new site, with the potential for expanding programs for children up to age five. Additionally, the organization aims to operate a neighborhood food pantry from the location, further enhancing its community support initiatives.
Olivet Neighborhood Mission has served northwest Cedar Rapids since the 1970s, providing basic items, including food, clothing and household items, to families and individuals in crisis. The organization also provides youth programs that encourage self-esteem, independence and community service.
Last month, leaders confirmed that the Olivet Mission would be closing its doors, effective Aug. 31, due to a lack of resources to help an increasing number of residents in need.
