Greater Iowa City, the Community Foundation of Johnson County, and United Way of Johnson & Washington Counties have collaborated on a new Board Leadership Program to prepare community members for service on nonprofit boards.

According to a release from Greater Iowa City, the Board Leadership Program (BLP) is a six-month educational series designed to equip individuals with professional or volunteer experience to become effective board members for local nonprofit organizations.

Applications for the Board Leadership Program are open until Aug. 30 on the Greater Iowa City website. The tuition fee for the program is $250 per person.

The BLP will provide participants with essential training, opportunities to expand their professional networks, and information on service opportunities in the Iowa City area. As stated in the release, the program will cover topics such as governance, nonprofit finance, fundraising, advocacy, equity and inclusion, and strategic planning.

“Serving on a nonprofit board, especially for the first time, can be intimidating,” said Shelly Maharry, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Johnson County, in the release. “The Board Leadership Program is designed to help participants gain the essential skills, insights, and connections needed to confidently embark on their board service journey.”

“The Board Leadership Program equips you with the skills needed to make an impact in your community,” added Jennifer Banta, President and CEO of United Way of Johnson & Washington Counties.

Mackenzie DeRoo, Senior Director of Advocacy for Greater Iowa City, also emphasized the importance of community engagement in the release.

“Our businesses encourage their employees to engage with the community,” Ms. DeRoo said in the release. “BLP is an exciting program focused on educating emerging leaders for service, which will equip them to meet local needs and embed them in our vibrant community.”
