Greater Iowa City, Inc. (Greater IC) has announced a new grant initiative, funded by Johnson County, aimed at enhancing the branding efforts of rural communities. This initiative seeks to improve the visual identity and cohesion of these areas through strategic branding projects.
“Branding is essential in rural areas as it cultivates a strong sense of identity and civic pride among residents. It strategically emphasizes a community’s unique strengths, thereby attracting visitors, potential residents, and new businesses,” Sarah Thompson, Greater IC director of rural development, stated in a news release.
According to the release, effective branding can significantly impact a town’s economic prospects by boosting tourism, attracting new residents, and drawing in key employers. It also fosters community cohesion by uniting residents under a shared vision and promoting a positive image both within and outside the community. Strong branding can thus serve as a powerful tool for rural towns to thrive while preserving their distinct identities.
Eligible rural towns or districts in Johnson County can receive grants of up to $5,000. The grant program is divided into two categories to ensure comprehensive support and deliverables. The first category covers the creation of logos, brand guidelines, and other visual identity elements that define and promote the community’s character. The second category, a matching funds grant, includes funding for tangible deliverables such as downtown wayfinding signage, banners, murals, and business decals. Organizations can apply for both categories or select one.
Communities interested in applying must submit a detailed application outlining their proposed projects. Applicants are required to form a temporary committee comprising at least three community representatives to oversee the branding project. This committee must include at least one city employee or elected official to align with existing city initiatives. Applications and a scoring rubric are available at Greater Iowa City’s Rural Development page.
