The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation and the United Way of East Central Iowa have both announced new disaster recovery funds in the wake of last week’s devastating derecho.
The Community Foundation’s Disaster Recovery Fund will allocate charitable contributions to support Linn County communities during disasters to provide resources where they are needed most. It was seeded with a gift of $100,000 from TaxAct, which is headquartered in Cedar Rapids and a division of the financial services company Blucora.
“Our top priority is to ensure the people of Cedar Rapids have what they need in order to recover from the destruction wrought by the derecho last week,” said Curtis Campbell, president of TaxAct, in a statement. “We decided that the best way to help in the recovery efforts was to make a donation to the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. … It’s my sincere hope that our gift, and the selfless actions of our employees to immediately spring into action to help others, will encourage additional donations and keep the flow of much needed supplies to those in need.”
Initially, the Community Foundation’s Disaster Recovery Fund will provide basic needs for those disproportionately affected by the derecho destruction. In the long-term, the fund will adapt to evolving needs. To give to the fund, click here. CBJ
