Meet the chef behind Barrett’s Quality Eats in Coralville

New eatery to feature fresh, local cuisine

Renowned pastry chef Cory Barrett has opened Barrett’s Quality Eats, a new neighborhood bakery-deli-cafe, in Coralville July 5.

Located at 3242 Crosspark Road, along Highway 965, the distinct building features a classic deli/bakery counter, custom coffee bar and indoor and patio seating.

Mr. Barrett, who moved his family from Ohio to Coralville to open the eatery, has worked alongside the esteemed Iron Chef Michael Symon. He is a James Beard Award semifinalist and starred in and won the Food Network’s Spring Baking Championship in 2018.

Inspired by classic, big-city bakeries and delis, Barrett’s Quality Eats specializes in handcrafted, fresh and local cuisine served in a convenient fashion and a welcoming environment.

The deli cases and bakery racks are filled with handmade breads and bagels, pastries, fresh salads, fruits and vegetables, rotisserie chicken, roasted salmon and artisan sandwiches.

To drink, Barrett’s has partnered with Iowa-based Stone Bru Coffee to roast a special house blend coffee and espresso. Barrett’s will also be squeezing fresh juice daily and serving a full list of cocktails and select wines and beers.

“Our aim is to create a place where folks that live or work in the neighborhood, or are just passing through, have a go-to place to get fresh and wholesome food,” Mr. Barrett said. “Essentially we are cooking all the kinds of food that we like to eat on a daily basis.”

Barrett’s Quality Eats will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, and will eventually be offering catering services. During the grand opening week, Barrett’s will also be giving out “cookies for a year” to the first 100 customers who relay a secret password at the cash register.

In addition to being a “regular “go-to spot” for the daily essentials,” Mr. Barrett said, “we really want to make the weekends special as well. We’ll be baking off an amazing deep dish cinnamon roll only on the weekends, which will be a lot of fun, and we really think this will be the perfect brunch hang-out spot.”
