Cedar Rapids students to be honored at 14 Under 14 awards

Kids First Law Center will honor 14 young Cedar Rapids students for their exceptional leadership with the return of the 14 Under 14 Awards, sponsored this year by Kirkwood Community College.

On Thursday, Feb. 29 from 4 p.m – 5 p.m., Avery, Devendra and Natalie, along with 11 other students, will take the stage at the Cedar Rapids Public Library in the Whipple Auditorium, where the impact on their schools and communities will be acknowledged.

All Cedar Rapids Community School District teachers were invited to nominate students for 14 Under 14 who embody the values of good citizenship, problem-solving, empathy, kindness, and perseverance.

Avery, age 10, is an advocate for equity and is described as “the voice of her classroom” by her school; Devendra, age 11, is an aspiring surgeon who delivers holiday goods to Willis Dady; and Natalie, age 12, is the creator of a Kindness Club that encourages small acts with big impacts

“Our mission is to make children’s voices heard,” said Jenny Schulz, Kids First executive director. “This event is an opportunity to encourage and amplify the voices of children who will one day lead our community.”

Ceremony attendees will hear uplifting stories about each student leader as the honorees are recognized and awarded. A cookie reception will immediately follow the awards ceremony, and both are free and open to the public.

The third annual 14 Under 14 awards are hosted by Kids First Law Center, a Cedar Rapids nonprofit in its 20th year, serving over 2,500 children annually in Eastern Iowa.
