Kirkwood program to receive $10k from CR Parks Foundation

Kirkwood

Kirkwood Community College will receive $10,000 from the Cedar Rapids Parks Foundation for a student project in Bever Park in Cedar Rapids. The money, which will be given to the Construction Management and Advanced Welding Technologies programs, will be presented 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, in Kirkwood’s Jones Hall.

Completed earlier this year, the project is a metal circle tubular structure called a bird’s nest that will be used to house a public exhibit in Bever Park. Using blueprints from the parks foundation and local landscape architect firm Confluence, Kirkwood students were able to gain real-world experience working on the project as a group. In addition, students also helped make various brackets for the exhibit signs.

Cedar Rapids Parks Foundation Executive Director Laurie Worden will present the check. Foundation board members, Kirkwood officials and students will be in attendance.

The funds will be used toward purchasing a new forming/rolling machine for fabrication classes taught at the college.
