ThirdSpace Create has been named the winner of the 2025 Race for the Space competition and will open a new location in downtown Cedar Rapids in the coming months, organizers announced.

The business, described as an immersive, technology-forward art gallery, aims to offer an alternative to traditional nightlife. As the winning concept, ThirdSpace will receive six months of provided rent along with access to business mentorship and promotional support as part of the program.

Race for the Space is a joint initiative of Downtown Cedar Rapids and the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, and is intended to support new or expanding businesses looking to establish themselves in the city center.

Downtown Dogs Canine Social Club, a members-only dog daycare styled after an early 20th-century speakeasy, was named runner-up. The business is already operating in the Kingston Village neighborhood.

Other finalists included DKW Art Gallery and L’Catering Fare Boutique.

The initiative was supported by a group of sponsors, including presenting sponsor Farmers State Bank. Additional support came from Armstrong Development Co., Aspect, the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, Cliff’s Dive Bar & Grill, and David Maier for City Council.

Applications for this year’s competition opened on May 8 and closed on June 30. The selection process included live presentations by finalists.

KETO Kitchen, a locally-owned restaurant, won the inaugural Race for the Space in 2022.
