Whirlpool has announced plans to lay off 341 workers at its Middle Amana plant, according to a notice posted to the Iowa Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act website Tuesday, Feb. 17.

The layoffs will be effective March 9, according to the release.

A Whirlpool spokesperson said the announcement is “the continuation of a broader multi-year transformation that will help diversify the operations of the Amana plant and better position it for the future.”

“As the only U.S.-based manufacturer of major kitchen and laundry appliances, Whirlpool Corporation’s facility in Amana, Iowa, is a vital part of the company’s U.S. manufacturing footprint,” Whirlpool said in an official statement. “Today’s announcement is part of a multi-year modernization plan that will transform the plant into a dynamic operation that will continue to produce best-in-class refrigerators, while also incorporating warehousing, parts production and sub-assembly work. This transformation is necessary to position the Amana plant for continued stability and success. We are committed to supporting affected employees through this transition.”

The spokesperson also said Whirlpool plans to invest in the Amana plant to expand operations and upgrade the types of products produced.

Whirlpool is anticipating “additional job reductions in the second quarter” as operational needs are assessed. “We have committed to sharing more information with employees as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said. “We are committed to supporting affected employees through this transition by providing access to onsite HR support, an employee assistance program and guidance on unemployment benefits through Iowa Workforce Development.”

In early April 2025, Whirlpool announced plans to lay off 650 workers at Middle Amana location, effective June 1. That layoff was set to impact about a third of the 2,000 employees at the plant, located at 2800 220th Trail in Middle Amana.

However, in June 2025, Whirlpool reduced the layoff total to 250 workers, with layoffs effective July 28, according to a Whirlpool spokesperson.

The Amana plant was part of the Amana Manufacturing company, founded in 1934. The company was sold to a group of investors in 1950 and renamed Amana Refrigeration. It was subsequently sold to Raytheon in 1965, to Goodman Global in 1997, to Maytag in 2002, and finally to Whirlpool Corporation in 2006.

The Whirlpool plant in Amana manufactures refrigerators, including French door and column refrigerators under the Amana, JennAir, KitchenAid, Maytag and Whirlpool brands.
