UI Health Care reports nearly $270M in 2016 community benefits

University of Iowa Health Care provided $269,035,216 in community benefits in 2016, according to the most recent community benefits report released by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA).

UI Health Care has provided programs, services and activities that provide treatment or promote health and healing in response to an identified community health need, which affected 660,000 people.  That amount includes $51,849,282 in uncompensated care and $13,873,824 in free or discounted charity care that UI Health Care specifically implemented to help the citizens of Iowa.

UI Health Care’s benefits to the communities and people of Iowa include free medical care of uninsured patients; health screenings and other preventive care services; public seminars on health topics; health professions education; biomedical research; and efforts to alleviate the root causes of health problems, such as homelessness, poverty and more.

The results for UI Health Care are included in a statewide report by the IHA. All Iowa hospitals combined provided community benefits in 2016 valued at more than $855 million, including more than $198 million in charity care. All 118 of Iowa’s community hospitals participated in the survey.
