Kirkwood Community College’s Workplace Learning Connection is accepting applications for summer 2026 high school internships through Feb. 6 at 3 p.m.
Current high school sophomores and juniors from Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and Washington counties are eligible to apply for the program, which places students in professional work settings.
“Internships help students connect what they’re learning in school to real careers and real workplaces,” said Brittany Slaubaugh, program coordinator and business liaison for the Workplace Learning Connection. “It’s an opportunity to gain experience, build confidence and start developing the skills employers value most.”
Students participating in the program earn dual credit through Kirkwood and their high school while working with area businesses and organizations. The internships focus on developing professional skills including professionalism, critical thinking, collaboration, social awareness and communication.
Internships can be completed during the school year or summer. School-year internships must be included on a student’s course schedule.
All applicants must apply and interview for positions. Placement depends on site availability, and not all applicants are accepted. Students may not receive their first-choice internship placement.
The program recommends students complete at least one Workplace Learning Connection job shadow before applying and work with their high school counselors throughout the application process.
Students may apply starting the summer before their junior year through the spring of their senior year. High school graduates are not eligible.
