What’s the best advice you ever received: Do not quit.

What do you consider your greatest professional accomplishments: Becoming a member at Shuttleworth & Ingersoll.

What would most people be surprised to learn about you: I’m a cyclist, outdoorsman and avid reader of ancient history. I like reading about how the people thousands of years ago were motivated by the same goals, dreams and desires that motivate people today.

What do you know now that you wish you had known earlier in your career: The practice of law is just that. It’s always changing and developing, so there’s always more to learn. It’s a never-ending process of learning.

How do you ensure a balance between work and your personal life: I spend a lot of time with my family and enjoy things as much as I can, but at the same time, I have the same professional goals that a lot of attorneys have, and want the best for my clients. I don’t know that there’s such a thing as work-life balance; you just want to work hard and enjoy what you do.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace: We’re dedicated and loyal.

If you had $1 million to give, what causes would you support: Grace Episcopal Church, the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, and the Safe Place, a transitional housing program for people suffering from drug and alcohol addiction.

What is your biggest passion: Working with inventors and entrepreneurs to secure their property rights. I find inventors engaging, excited and passionate about what they’re doing. I just enjoy being a part of it, and getting to live vicariously through them.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt: Ski instructor.
