The Iowa City Downtown District is looking to hire its first-ever director of economic vitality, a newly created leadership position aimed at guiding business attraction, retention and long-term economic growth strategies for the downtown core.
The organization announced the position Monday, June 15, saying it reflects a priority area identified in the ICDD’s long-term Strategic Plan.
“This position represents a major investment in the future of Downtown Iowa City,” said Betsy Potter, ICDD executive director in a statement. “As downtown continues to evolve and looks towards the next 10 years, we recognize the importance of having dedicated leadership focused on business attraction, retention, redevelopment opportunities, and building strong relationships that support a thriving and resilient economy in our City core.”
According to a news release, the new director will oversee business recruitment and retention efforts, development partnerships, market analysis, entrepreneurial support and strategic economic development initiatives across the district. The role will also manage development pipelines, including the organization’s locatedowntowniowacity.com portal, and work to align economic strategies with the ICDD’s broader placemaking, marketing and activation efforts.
The ICDD cited a rapidly changing retail landscape — particularly in soft goods and traditional brick-and-mortar sectors — and increasing competition from surrounding communities for new investment, businesses and talent as factors driving the need for a more proactive approach to economic development. The organization also pointed to growing demand from entrepreneurs seeking flexible, community-oriented environments to launch and grow businesses.
Recent changes in property ownership, new business openings, redevelopment opportunities and an expansion of the district’s boundaries further informed the decision to create the role, according to the release.
“This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about downtowns, economic development, and community-building,” Ms. Potter said.
Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter to [email protected]. The application deadline is June 25.
