The COVID-19 pandemic opened up new ways of programming for Hancher Auditorium, the four-time consecutive winner in Best Fine Arts Venue category.
“We had to change the way we approach our work. Usually, we’re in the midst of planning and looking ahead,” said executive director Chuck Swanson. “We kind of had to look at each day as a new adventure. We quickly learned about the virtual world of presenting, finding ways to bring artists and audiences together without using our beautiful hall.”
This included outdoor performances like the American Ballet Theatre from New York City, which drew about 2,500 people over the Fourth of July weekend.
As part of the University of Iowa, Hancher is committed to teaching and learning, and inspiring creative approaches to reaching and engaging with students and people of all ages and backgrounds, Mr. Swanson said.
“We are always striving for the highest quality, and more than anything, we have a goal of building a community where everyone feels welcome,” he said.
Hancher is excited to welcome audiences back into the state-of-the-art auditorium with a slate of performances starting with “Step Afrika!, Drumfolk” on Sept. 11.
