Iowa City law firm Meardon, Sueppel & Downer P.L.C. has disbanded following more than 75 years of practice.

“Since 1948, Meardon, Sueppel & Downer P.L.C. has enjoyed a long history of providing excellent legal services to our clients and community. As its attorneys turn a new page, they look forward to providing that same quality service in their new locations,” a message on its website said.

William L. Meardon started the practice following his graduation from University of Iowa College of Law, setting up shop at 22 ½ S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City before constructing a new building on south Linn Street in 1977, the website also said.

Timothy Krumm, an attorney with the former practice, said the decision was made to shutter the firm because his colleagues can better serve their clients from other locations. Some of the attorneys have joined Shuttleworth & Ingersoll, Leff Law Firm, and Hayek, Moreland, Smith & Bergus.

In 2018, the Iowa City Area Business Partnership presented the firm with a Roots Award for celebrating over 50 years of Chamber membership, which also coincided with the firm’s 70th anniversary.

Meardon, Sueppel & Downer’s location at 122 South Linn Street is listed on Skogman Commercial Realty for $3.2 million and has been on the market since March.

The law firm officially closed its doors last week on May 1.
