The Youth Empowered to Serve (Y.E.S.) employment program has returned to Johnson County for the summer, Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County and Johnson County Social Services announced.

The eight-week internship initiative is designed for youth ages 14 to 18 and provides valuable work placements, financial literacy training, and on-the-job skills development opportunities in Iowa City and neighboring communities.

“Participants will gain insights into various career paths and develop essential skills through job shadowing, hands-on projects, and authentic work experiences,” a news release said. “The Y.E.S. program not only offers employment opportunities but also nurtures personal and professional growth for the youth of Johnson County, emphasizing our commitment to empowering them for success in the workforce.”

Additionally, participants will have access to weekly trainings that cover mental health, financial literacy, and team-building activities, within the context of a supportive environment that encourages an exploration of interests to prepare for future career paths.

Interested youth must complete an online application by May 25. Selected participants will begin an eight-week program on June 17th, working up to 10 hours per week.

Applications can be completed online or in person between 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, at either the Pheasant Ridge Neighborhood Center – 2651 Roberts Rd. in Iowa City – or the Broadway Center, 2105 Broadway St. in Iowa City.
