University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital has opened a new neonatal intensive care unit on Level 7 of its children’s hospital, adding 32 beds to its nationally ranked neonatology program.

According to a news release, the expanded unit began welcoming patients and families on March 3, 2026. The new floor includes dedicated support spaces, family waiting areas, and provider work rooms designed to improve workflows and communication among care teams. It represents the first half of a two-phase expansion — Level 8 is slated for completion later this year. Both floors were originally built as shell spaces when the hospital opened in 2017, with plans to develop them at a future date.

Stead Family Children’s Hospital is home to Iowa’s only Level 4 NICU, the highest designation recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics, and reports some of the highest survival rates in the country for extremely premature infants.

Hospital leaders say the expansion addresses a growing demand for specialized newborn care across the state.

“As access to maternal and newborn care remains limited in many communities, we are seeing more complex pregnancies and babies who need our advanced neonatal services,” said Denise Jamieson, MD, MPH, UI vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Carver College of Medicine in a statement.

The Level 7 unit supports several specialized services, including neonatal hemodynamics — an advanced imaging technique used to monitor cardiovascular health in newborns. The expansion also includes a centralized milk and formula mixing station, which hospital officials say will standardize nutrition preparation and allow staff to focus more directly on patient care.

“This expansion creates an environment where families and care teams can truly thrive,” said Brady Thomas, MD, NICU medical director in a statement.
