A new ramen shop and cocktail lounge is opening in downtown Iowa City this October. Paper Crane Ramen Shop & Cocktail Lounge will be opened in a collaboration between The Webster owners, Sam and Riene Gelman, and longtime team member Edwin Lee at 121 N Linn Street.
According to a news release, Mr. Lee has been an integral part of The Webster’s kitchen since its opening. In this new role as Chef Partner, he will lead the kitchen, offering his personal take on ramen, developed through successful pop-up events at The Webster. Mr. Lee’s menu will bring a dynamic range of ramen offerings, including both traditional and seasonal selections.
“I’m incredibly excited to share Paper Crane with the Iowa City community,” he said, in the release. “We’ve created something truly special that brings a new energy to the dining scene—there’s nothing quite like it here, and I believe it will set a new standard for the type of experiences people can expect downtown.”
The decision to open Paper Crane stems from a recognition of Iowa City’s growing demand for casual, approachable, yet expertly crafted dining options, the release states.
“We wanted to create a space that not only fulfills a clear need in the community but also provides an elevated, yet inviting, dining experience,” Mr. Gelman said, in the release. “Ed’s expertise and creativity in the kitchen will be the driving force behind the menu, and we’re thrilled to share his vision with Iowa City.”
Paper Crane’s unique concept extends beyond its culinary offerings. The venue is designed as two distinct spaces: the ramen restaurant, offering a fast-casual yet full-service dining experience, paired with an intimate cocktail lounge that will cater to an adult crowd with refined tastes. With its moody, sophisticated ambiance, the lounge will feature expertly crafted cocktails, complemented by a curated menu of small plates and bar appetizers, making it a destination for those seeking an elevated evening out or a post-work libation.
The ramen restaurant will provide a casual and accessible option for both lunch and dinner, with an emphasis on high-quality food served efficiently, making it ideal for a quick bite before a show or event. In addition to dine-in services, takeaway and delivery options will be available.
“We’ve thoughtfully developed Paper Crane to offer something truly unique in Iowa City—combining our passion for exceptional food with a design and dining experience that reflects both creativity and comfort,” Ms. Gelman said, in the release.
The restaurant is slated to open in mid-October and is currently hiring for various positions, with applications available online on the Iowa City Downtown District Job Board or by emailing [email protected].
