Tanager Place’s LGBTQ Center receives grant

Tanager Place recently received a $30,000 grant award from Amerigroup, An Anthem Company. The monies received will support the efforts of the Tanager Place LGBTQ Center located on the main level of The Estle Center, 1030 Fifth Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids.

The center provides a safe and confidential environment for LGBTQ youth, families and allies. Programs at the center are diverse and include support groups, special art offerings, mentoring programs, a Pride Café, community service opportunities, health initiative classes, parent workshops, financial literacy, tutoring and career exploration.

The Center has been in existence since 2018 and each year touches the lives of hundreds in the community. “

This grant will enable us to grow and expand our programs and events and increase our capacity to serve kids and families. Not a day goes by when I do not hear about a new need or concern,” Center Director Lori Ampey stated in a release. “We also learn every day that we need to educate and promote inclusion and equity around the center and our families. There is still so much work that needs to be done in order to make sure the LGBTQ community feels safe and accepted in the Corridor.”
