Steindler Orthopedic Clinic has opened a new location in Cedar Rapids – its first clinic in Linn County.

The Iowa City-based orthopedic services provider opened the new Cedar Rapids clinic Aug. 5 at 4000 River Ridge Dr. NE Ste. 2, a 5,000-square-foot space formerly occupied by Piper Family Medicine.

Patrick Magallanes, president and CEO of Steindler Orthopedic, said Steindler has been considering a Cedar Rapids location for “about two years” due to its substantial patient volume in and around the Cedar Rapids area, and after touring the recently-vacated space on River Ridge Drive, determined the space would suit Steindler’s needs with minimal remodeling.

“We serve many patients from Linn County and from the north,” Mr. Magallanes said. “We believe that serving patients in their communities is appreciated by our patients.”

The new Steindler clinic should also help address a longstanding shortage of orthopedic specialists in Cedar Rapids, Mr. Magallanes said.

“I believe our Cedar Rapids clinic will provide another option, and we are glad to be bringing Steindler care into the local community,” he said.

The new clinic will offer a full range of orthopedic services, including x-ray and durable medical equipment, along with a partnership with the neighboring Progressive Therapy, which also opened its new Cedar Rapids physical therapy location Aug. 5.

A total of 16 Steindler physicians will see patients at the new Cedar Rapids location, most traveling from Steindler’s main facility.

The Cedar Rapids location will be the largest of Steindler’s seven satellite clinics, joining locations in Burlington, Fairfield, Keosauqua, Muscatine, Washington and Williamsburg. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Two new physicians will be starting with Steindler in the next few months, including Dr. Clayton Walker, who is completing a Stanford fellowship and will start in October, and Dr. Ericka Lawler, the longtime director of the hand and upper extremity fellowship program at University of Iowa Health Care, who will join Steindler Jan. 1.

Mr. Magallanes also said construction of Steindler’s new clinic, at the intersection of Kansas Avenue and Forevergreen Road, is proceeding as scheduled and “tracking under budget.”

He said he expects to receive the keys to the new facility on or before March 5, 2025, and to begin seeing patients at the new facility in April 2025.

The new 83,000-square-foot facility will include an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) and six operating rooms. Two more joint surgeons are being pursued to support Steindler’s outreach services and the ASC, Mr. Magallanes said.

Mr. Magallanes said Steindler continues to pursue “partners” to further develop the 36-acre North Liberty property as a medical campus, with facilities owned and operated by private practice physicians.

“We are making significant progess with private practice physicians, health care entities and related interested parties,” he said. “We’ve also had significant non-medical related interest, but we are focused on further medically-related development.”
