Iowa policymakers have approved $200,000 to continue the Choose Iowa initiative, a program that helps food banks purchase locally grown products while creating new market opportunities for farmers across the state.

According to a news release, the funding, matched dollar-for-dollar by food bank partners, effectively doubles the state’s investment. This year marks the program’s expansion to include schools.

Choose Iowa connects Iowa’s six food banks with local farmers, enabling the distribution of Iowa-grown fruits, vegetables, meat and cheese through food pantries statewide.

The Iowa Food Bank Association reported its six member organizations distributed 54 million meals in 2025. Despite strong donation levels, the association’s food banks collectively spent $9 million more last year than in 2024, underscoring growing demand for supplemental purchasing programs like Choose Iowa.

Katie Sorrell, executive director of the Iowa Food Bank Association, said the program has broad public support. A recent survey found more than 80% of Iowa voters favor expanding Choose Iowa, she said.

Rep. Norlin Mommsen, chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee, championed the continued funding. “The Choose Iowa Food Bank Program continues to be a successful program because it connects agriculture directly to Iowa families,” Mr. Mommsen said, adding that the school expansion represents new ground for the initiative.
