UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital and Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa (PCI) have launched a joint bariatric surgery program.

The program offers comprehensive metabolic and bariatric surgery options for patients seeking weight loss solutions. Led by PCI surgeon Dr. Rebecca Milburn, the program is tailored for individuals with a BMI over 40 or a BMI over 35 accompanied by conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, COPD, or sleep apnea.

According to a news release, Dr. Milburn performs various bariatric procedures exclusively at St. Luke’s, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, SADI, revisions, and lap band maintenance. Emphasizing the safety and effectiveness of these surgeries, Dr. Milburn highlights the pre-surgery preparation process and the importance of post-surgery habit changes to sustain long-term weight loss.

With obesity affecting more than 40% of Americans and more than 35% of Iowans, bariatric surgery presents a viable option for those struggling with obesity-related health risks, the release states. Patients are advised to consult with their healthcare provider to explore if this treatment is suitable for them.
