Two Iowa City businesses have received new exterior signage through a program funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, marking the first completed projects in the South of Six Business District’s signage initiative.

Dream City and Zoetic Coffee received new signage through the program, which launched in November and is funded by ARPA dollars distributed through the city of Iowa City.

The Signage Program provides matching grants to help businesses in the district improve visibility and strengthen their identity, according to Maurice A. Davis, director of the South of Six Iowa City Business District.

“These signs are about more than branding,” Mr. Davis said, in a release. “They help people find places more easily, they soften our buildings, and they make the neighborhood feel warmer and more inviting. That sense of care and visibility plays a real role in helping people feel safe and welcome in their community.”

Frederick Newell, executive director of Dream City at 611 Southgate Ave., said the new marquee sign has received positive feedback and helped people find and connect with the organization.

“This investment reflects a shared commitment to uplifting local organizations and businesses, and we’re excited to continue growing alongside the district,” Mr. Newell said.

Zoetic Coffee, which opened in December in the South District Market at 947 U.S. 6, received funding for signage on the Pepperwood Plaza Monument Sign and a window decal at the South District Market through a 50-50 matching grant.

“Being tucked away off the main drag, we knew that visibility was our biggest hurdle before opening our doors,” said Lisa Bishop, owner of Zoetic Coffee. “The entire grant process was incredibly seamless.”

The district views the signage program as part of a broader placemaking and community-safety strategy, Mr. Davis said. The improvements aim to create an environment that supports existing businesses and future growth.

“These projects are just the beginning,” Mr. Davis said. “We’re working toward a district where people want to spend time, businesses want to invest, and the community feels connected. Signage is one tool among many we’re using to help make that vision real.”

The South of Six Iowa City Business District has launched a second round of the Signage Program, with additional projects expected in the coming months, the release stated.
