Sanctuary Pub, a favorite English-inspired watering hole in Iowa City since 1972, has closed its doors.

No formal announcement was made on the pub’s social media pages or website before it shuttered last month, a “for lease” sign from Barkalow Associates & Realtors appearing in the windows shortly thereafter.

“Find yourself stepping into a piece of local history in this really cool bar. With full commercial kitchen, multiple seating areas, large bar and even a stage for live music this place has a lot to offer,” the advertisement from the real estate agency stated.

Former owner and University of Iowa alum Daryl Woodson managed the pub, located at 405 S. Gilbert St., until 2017. Since then it has changed hands twice, most recently under the proprietorship of Chris Cavin, who did some remodeling in July.

Tracy Barkalow, owner of the building, said he has had several interested parties inquiring about the space.

Which Wich on Dubuque Street also shutters

Sandwich shop Which Wich, 23 S. Dubuque St., has also recently shuttered its business.

The restaurant’s Facebook page is still posting, despite the building remaining closed and “for lease” signs – also from Barkalow Associates & Realtors – advertised in the windows. Google lists the location as being “temporarily closed” and a number associated with the business rang continuously without going to voicemail.

Businesses on South Dubuque Street struggled to retain foot traffic and revenue last year when the roadway underwent extensive construction, beginning in March and concluding in October 2024.

Which Wich also closed its two other Iowa locations in Coralville and Ames, and attempts to reach the owner were unsuccessful. Mr. Barkalow says a new business will be moving in within the next few weeks, but declined to give a name.
