HNI Corporation, based in Muscatine, will close its Wayland, New York, manufacturing plant in 2027 and consolidate production into other North American facilities.

The publicly traded furniture manufacturer expects the consolidation to save approximately $7.5 million to $8 million annually once fully implemented. All products currently produced at the Wayland facility will shift to existing facilities across HNI’s manufacturing network.

“Closing the facility is a difficult decision given the hard work and expertise of the Wayland team. We are grateful for our Wayland members’ dedication and craftsmanship, and we are committed to providing support and resources throughout the transition,” HNI chief operating officer Brandon Bullock said in a release. “This is a strategic change that aligns with our continued network optimization journey. We are announcing the consolidation a year in advance as part of our commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for our members and our customers.”

The Gunlocke brand and its products will continue as part of HNI’s portfolio.

The closure will result in approximately 135 job terminations in Wayland.

HNI anticipates the consolidation will generate charges totaling an estimated $14.9 million in pre-tax earnings in 2026 and 2027, including $5.7 million in non-cash charges.

The consolidation follows HNI’s strategic integration of Kimball International. Total cost synergies from that integration are now expected to reach $68 million by the end of 2028.

HNI Corporation trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol HNI.
