Mercy Medical Center now offers focal therapy using high-intensity focused ultrasound as a treatment option for men with localized prostate cancer.

The treatment, called Sonablate, is available through Mercy urologist Dr. Matthew Ferroni.

“Focal therapy gives us the ability to target and destroy cancerous tissue without the need for surgery or radiation,” Dr. Ferroni said. “For many men, this means fewer side effects and a faster return to normal activities.”

The procedure uses focused sound waves to generate heat and destroy affected tissue while leaving surrounding healthy tissue unharmed. It is performed without incisions, which typically allows for quicker recovery and minimal downtime.

The treatment aims to minimize sexual side effects compared to traditional prostatectomy procedures.

Recent studies show outcomes for focal therapy are comparable to surgery for certain prostate cancers, with many patients able to avoid additional interventions years after treatment, according to the release.

The procedure is currently covered only by Medicare.
