Mercy IC recognized for orthopedic surgery, joint replacement

Mercy Iowa City

Orthopedic surgery and joint replacement care at Mercy Iowa City is among the top 10 percent in the nation as measured by volume-weighted performance according to this year’s evaluation from Healthgrades, an online resource helping consumers make informed decisions.

All joint and orthopedic procedures at Mercy Iowa City are performed by the orthopedic surgeons at Steindler Orthopedic Clinic under a longstanding partnership which began in 1945 by Dr. Arthur Steindler. Mercy Iowa City, in partnership with Steindler Orthopedic Clinic, is the only hospital in the state of Iowa to receive Healthgrades’ Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award and the Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2017.

A celebration of these achievements will be held at 8 a.m. March 6 in the atrium at Mercy Iowa City, 500 E. Market St., Iowa City. There will also be a celebration at the Steindler Clinic, 2751 Northgate Drive, Iowa City, at 5:30 p.m. March 6.

This achievement is part of findings released by Healthgrades and is featured in its 2017 Report to the Nation. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally.

“Together Mercy Iowa City and Steindler Orthopedic Clinic have successfully achieved many years of recognition from Healthgrades, Blue Cross Blue Shield and others for the excellence of the orthopedic surgery program,” Mercy Iowa City Interim President and CEO Mike Heinrich stated in a press release.

“Steindler Orthopedic has been a proud partner of Mercy Iowa City for many years,” Jerald Forrester, CEO and president of Steindler Orthopedic Clinic, stated in a press release. “We are thrilled that this partnership has been recognized for the exceptional patient care provided at our clinic and in the hospital.”

This is the ninth year in a row that Healthgrades has recognized Mercy Iowa City in the top 10 percent in the nation for joint replacement (2009-2017).
