Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell has proclaimed March 19 as Buy 319 Local Day in the city, acting on a request from the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance.

The proclamation recognizes locally owned small businesses as central to Cedar Rapids’ economy, citing their role in job creation, neighborhood development, and community character. It also notes that locally spent dollars are more likely to stay in the region, supporting jobs, public services, and economic growth.

Buy 319 is an Economic Alliance initiative that encourages residents and businesses to prioritize local purchasing decisions. The date reflects the region’s 319 area code.

“Local spending creates a ripple effect across our economy,” said Juliet Abdel, president and CEO of the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance. “Buy 319 Local Day gives everyone a simple way to support local entrepreneurs and strengthen our region.”

To mark the occasion, the Economic Alliance will offer a limited-time bonus gift card promotion from March 17 through March 19. The cards can be used at participating local restaurants, retailers, service providers, and entertainment venues.

Residents are encouraged to shop, dine, book services, and purchase gift cards on March 19, and to share their participation using the hashtag #Buy319.

More information, including a list of participating businesses and gift card details, is available at Buy319.com.
