Matthew 25’s Groundswell Cafe extending hours

Starting Monday, Jan. 9, the Groundswell Cafe at Matthew 25 in Cedar Rapids will be expanding its hours to be open six days per week: Monday-Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We’re excited to add another day to our operating hours in 2023 to better serve the community, especially with our partnership with Good Meals To Go at the Cultivate Hope Corner Store and other exciting initiatives we have planned for this year,” said Groundswell director Philip Hamilton.

Groundswell Cafe provides a pathway to healthy food for a wide spectrum of people. People receiving reduced-cost or free meals at the cafe come from a variety of backgrounds, including those who are homeless, elderly folks on a fixed income, recent immigrants still getting their feet under them, and single parents working at low-paying jobs who are struggling to make ends meet.

With Groundswell’s pay-it-forward model, the cafe is able to serve these reduced-cost or free meals thanks to generous tips and donations at the register from paying guests.

Over the past year, the cafe has seen an increased number of people needing food. In 2022 alone, Groundswell provided $53,000 worth of meals. By opening on Mondays, cafe officials hope to provide for those in need, while serving more paying customers and raising money for the pay-it-forward fund that supports these meals.

To kick off the new Monday hours, the cafe will be doing a Monday breakfast special during the month of January. Every breakfast order of an omelet, breakfast sandwich, wrap or breakfast burrito will receive a free side. Side choices include a hash brown, bowl of fruit, or oatmeal and berries.
