Dezeen, an architecture and design magazine, named Iowa City’s Public Works building in its top 10 architecture projects in the U.S. in 2022.

The headquarters building houses employees and equipment of Iowa City’s street and water departments. It was designed by Neumann Monson Architects and is nearly 100,000 square feet.

Neumann Monson Architects is based in Des Moines and Iowa City. The company has worked in Iowa for more than 40 years.

Dezeen wrote the architects incorporated large swaths of polycarbonate to bring in daylight throughout the building.

“The building was designed using 50-foot modules to accommodate future changes and additions,” the article reads. “Materials were chosen for being highly durable, low-maintenance and cost-effective.”

Dezeen commenters were divided over whether the exterior of the Public Works building was bland or elegant.

The other top 10 buildings were in Connecticut, California, Indiana, New York and Texas.
