Iowa City is accepting applications for its Climate Action Grant program, offering nonprofits and businesses up to $10,000 to fund community-led environmental initiatives.

The program is designed to “empower Iowa City nonprofit organizations, businesses, and groups to take climate action,” an announcement from the city stated. “Funds can be used on projects that advance energy efficiency, support the use of renewable energy, encourage low or no-emissions transportation, support sustainable lifestyle choices, and promote climate preparedness and resilience.”

The city expects to fund eight to 10 projects annually.

Applications will be accepted March 1 through 5 p.m. April 1 via the city’s website. Projects cannot begin before July 1, 2026, and must be completed by June 30, 2027.

The grant program stems from Iowa City’s 2018 Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, which set goals to reduce carbon emissions 45% from 2010 levels by 2030 and approach net-zero emissions by 2050.
