Iowa is awarding more than $3.25 million in grants to support 70 registered apprenticeship programs across the state, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Monday as part of the state’s observance of National Apprenticeship Week.
The awards, distributed through the Iowa Office of Apprenticeship, are split between two state grant programs designed to sustain and expand registered apprenticeship programs as employers train workers in high-demand occupations.
The larger of the two, the Iowa Apprenticeship Act, is distributing $2.94 million to 58 program sponsors supporting 4,258 active apprentices. The funds can be used for training or ongoing program costs within any active registered apprenticeship program in the state.
The Iowa Registered Apprenticeship Development Program is awarding an additional $317,236 to 13 sponsors who are creating new programs — or adding occupations — in eligible high-demand fields.
The Iowa Office of Apprenticeship, which completed its first full fiscal year in 2025, oversees more than 900 apprenticeship programs hosting more than 9,200 active apprentices statewide.
“Whether we are supporting the creation of new programs or sustaining longstanding programs, Iowa has demonstrated its commitment to registered apprenticeships,” Reynolds said. “Iowa’s investment in registered apprenticeships demonstrates our commitment to supporting alternative career pathways in high-quality training programs in high-demand occupations because we recognize the value they provide to our state.”
Beth Townsend, executive director of Iowa Workforce Development, said the grants help connect Iowans with career pathways at any stage of life.
“Registered apprenticeship programs continue to be successful options for Iowans looking to develop new skills, at any point in their lives,” Ms. Townsend said in a release. “Today’s grant awards help employers create and sustain high-quality training programs and help Iowans find new and exciting pathways into high-paying and secure careers.”
National Apprenticeship Week runs April 26 through May 2.
