Horizon Science Academy, a new tuition-free, STEM-focused charter public school, is set to open in Cedar Rapids this fall, offering kindergarten through fifth-grade students an alternative to traditional public education.

Horizon Science Academy Cedar Rapids is scheduled to begin classes in August 2026 at the Radiant Church, 3233 Blairs Ferry Road NE. The school is authorized to operate as a nonprofit charter public school by the Iowa State Department of Education and is described in the announcement as the first and only elementary charter option in Cedar Rapids.

The school will offer a curriculum centered on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, with an emphasis on critical thinking and academic development. Enrollment is open to all students at no cost.

“No matter where a student begins, our goal at HSA is to meet them where they are and help them thrive,” said Dr. Chris Murphy, superintendent. “We are excited to bring a world-class educational option to Cedar Rapids families that is public, free, and open to all.”

Radiant Church has entered into a long-term partnership with the school.

Horizon Science Academy describes itself as a non-selective institution focused on preparing students for post-secondary education and careers in a competitive global workforce.
