The Goosetown Cafe in Iowa City’s Northside neighborhood is closed indefinitely, according to an online announcement.

In a Facebook post Monday titled “A Farewell To All Guests & Friends,” Goosetown’s owners, Peter and Kathy Kessler, wrote that “with a heart-felt thank you, we are writing to announce the indefinite closing of Goosetown.”

“We are humbled by the relationships that were built as so many embraced our restaurant,” the post said. “We are proud that we were able to thrive through a pandemic and over the course of five years. We could not have done it without all of you. We go to restaurants to nourish our souls as much as our bellies and right now we’re full.”

Goosetown Cafe opened in June 2018 at 203 N. Linn St., the building previously occupied by the Northside Cafe.

A description said Goosetown “serves unexpectedly playful dishes, highlighting exceptional, seasonal, locally-sourced first ingredients, and a bespoke cocktail menu.”

The restaurant’s name “pays homage to the northside neighborhood’s rich history,” its website indicated. “The Goosetown neighborhood got its own name because many of its Czech immigrant residents owned geese and would let them out each morning.”

A recent announcement had indicated that Goosetown in Iowa City was “temporarily closed – stay tuned for changes,” but Monday’s announcement altered that plan.
