It seems the former AMC Classic Westdale 12 movie theater in southwest Cedar Rapids will soon be the home of an indoor trampoline park.

According to property records from the Cedar Rapids assessor’s office, a building permit has been issued for an interior remodel of the former AMC Classic theater building, at 2435 Edgewood Road SW, for “Fun City Trampoline Park.”

The records indicate that demolition work inside the 46,181-square-foot building began in mid-December, and remodeling began Feb. 3. The records also include a note, “need more info,” regarding the project.

There’s no information in the records indicating a possible opening date for the new trampoline park.

The former AMC Classic Westdale 12 building was sold for $750,000 in a two-day online auction that concluded Dec. 4. The buyer wasn’t immediately identified, but Assessor’s Office records now show the buyer as “SVC1 LLC,” based in Newton, Massachusetts.

The property was valued at $1,844,000 as of January 2024, according to the Cedar Rapids assessor website, including $1,370,000 for the land and $474,000 for the improvements.

However, that value included the parking lot in front of the theater itself. That parking lot is now being redeveloped as a new location for Texas Roadhouse.

Chris Scheck, owner and franchise operator for Texas Roadhouse, has indicated he plans to open the new restaurant in April 2025.

Carmike Cinemas opened the theater as the Wynnsong 12 in February 1999, with a grand opening featuring movies such as “Varsity Blues,” “My Favorite Martian” and “A Bug’s Life.” It was acquired by AMC in 2016, and was first closed in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite company assurances that the theater would reopen when the pandemic subsided, it never did, and AMC officials confirmed in February 2023 that the theater was permanently closed.

There are two existing trampoline parks in the Cedar Rapids area – AirFX trampoline park at 1100 N. 18th Ave. in Hiawatha, which opened in April 2014, and Sky Zone Trampoline Park at 5515 Council St. NE in Cedar Rapids, which opened in February 2015.
