Celebrating its 53rd year, Downtown Iowa City’s Annual Sidewalk Sales begin today and runs through Sunday, July 18. More than 30 shops will be offering deals and merchandise at deep discounts for the annual event.

“This weekend, shops are cleaning out their inventories looking to free up space for fall inventory,”  Director of Special Events Christopher Hunter stated in a press release. “Sidewalk Sales has always been a festive environment with attendees coming from all over Iowa City, and the area to take part in visiting their favorite stores and most likely discovering new ones,”

In addition to the summer-savings event, there is plenty to do and see downtown this weekend. The Weatherdance Stage in the Pedmall will have live entertainment. Music on the Pedmall is from 6:30-9:30 p.m. tonight and Summer of the Art’s Friday Night Concert Series is from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. Friday.  Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair, sit down, and enjoy the evening’s live performances.

Other activities include the Downtown Iowa City StoryWalk and the Loop, an international public art installation. Attendees can pick up the route maps at the Iowa City Public Library for the downtown route and at r.s.v.p. for the Northside route. Fill in the blanks with missing words or items for a chance to win a copy of the book.

The Loop, brought to the public by the Iowa City Downtown District, City of Iowa City, and Think Iowa City, features giant luminous wheels. Each of the 12 zoetropes showcases different visuals and sounds that are being displayed in the United States for the first time. The free installation is open until Aug. 10.
