April Schmaltz, interim co-CEO and senior vice president of sales and marketing for Delta Dental of Iowa, has been named the company’s new president and CEO.

The announcement, made in a news release Jan. 8, follows a comprehensive national search that produced a strong pool of candidates.

“We are pleased to welcome April as president and CEO,” said Rowena Crosbie, Delta Dental of Iowa board chair. “April’s strong track record of providing strategic leadership, along with her experience in the health care and financial services industries, made her the unanimous choice of the board. Her background provides a unique perspective of understanding the needs of members, providers, brokers and employers. She brings the passion and expertise to lead Delta Dental as it continues to grow its core dental and vision business, expand its product offerings, and fulfill its mission to support the health and wellness of our communities.”

“I’m honored for this opportunity to lead this exceptional organization into the future,” Ms. Schmaltz said. “It is truly a privilege to work with the dedicated Delta Dental team as we deliver on our promise to improve the health and smiles of the people we serve, whether this is through the many benefits we provide our customers or the investments we make in our communities.”

Ms. Schmaltz has been with the company since 2014, leading sales, marketing and product development. With more than 25 years of experience in executive leadership, strategy, and new business growth, she has held a variety of executive leadership roles in the health care and financial services industries. She holds a bachelor of arts degree from St. Mary’s University and a master of business administration from Iowa State University.

In addition, Ms. Schmaltz serves on numerous professional and community boards and councils, including the Healthiest State Initiative, EveryStep, and the Global Insurance Accelerator.

“April has been a tremendous asset to Delta Dental during this leadership transition,” said Ms. Crosbie. “She has worked in partnership with our established and accomplished executive leadership team to move the company forward. Delta Dental is well positioned with strong financials, a vibrant company culture, dedicated employees, a strategy focused on innovation and diversification, and a commitment to the communities we serve.”
